"The 2010 version of the Housatonic Hills took place on a very hot and humid Father's Day, and what better gift for any father than making the podium at this classic Connecticut road race. After a
painful neutral start up Constitution Hill, Lorenzo Grippo and I worked our way closer to the front
on the next big climb. Lorenzo stayed back and I found myself very close to the front after the
first climb. After the rider I was following made a wrong turn, I now found myself at the front
which was not ideal so early in the race.
After locating Lorenzo, I made every effort to slow down,
conserve energy and allow someone else to
set the pace.
Our strategy at this point was to allow others to get impatient and set tempo at the
front, while we stayed just off the front and close enough to cover any breaks. There was still a
lot of racing and climbing until the finish and I knew Davenport would cause a large amount of
separation
among the group. As we approached the long and steep Davenport climb, Lorenzo and I began
to pick up the pace as the climb progressed and the overall suffering of the pack intensified. We
were soon at the front with only a few riders.
Towards the very end of the climb, at its steepest point, Lorenzo made an aggressive move to break away from the group and I followed. The climb and pace shattered the the field, which thinned the
lead group to a few riders. At this point there were about six or eight riders remaining
up front and
our gap kept on growing. Lorenzo and I were the only team members in the group and the group worked
together until the last climb.
On the final climb for the King of the Mountain title Lorenzo and I
pulled away slightly from the group, and I had a decent gap after more than half the climb. Lorenzo
overtook me towards the end (too much pain to remember all the details here..
I just remember a guy ringing a really loud cow bell dressed in some crazy outfit!), crossed first
and took the King of Mountain title.
I followed and we slowed enough to regroup with other riders
and ensure the pace stayed quick enough to stay ahead of the larger group but not so fast we have
nothing left for the finish. Coming into the final corner Lorenzo put some distance between him and
the rest of the group with an early jump. I followed a few seconds later hoping to conserve some
energy and seeing no other riders jump.
After a sprint finish, Lorenzo crossed first, adding the
Cat 5 winners jersey to his King of Mountain title. In the final 50 yards to the finish I was able
to close the gap and overtake another rider, passing him and then crossing the line in third place.
A double podium result for Tarmac, and a great father's day gift for both of us."-----Craig T.
